user login activity

I need to produce a script that will create a report that will be emailed to me that will Log user login activity to detect unauthorized remote access attempts. Where would I start?

Possible roadmap: write a bash (python, perl, etc.) script that will check output of `faillog -a`, remember failed attempts and send an email if you detect new ones (you will need to setup an smtp server on your machine). Put this script on the cron schedule and make it run every half-hour or so. If you google, you'll find how to do those individual tasks in minutes. Good luck!
