User/Group Admin
 

Good morning people,
I have been running Fedora 11 and Linux for all of 18 hours right at this point (recent convert from V@#$&a).
Small problem, I tried to add my regular login to the root group in the gui User Group Admin program on Fedora 11. Now I can't get in to modify users or groups. When I launch the program it will ask for the password the first time, the screen will flash for half a second then go away and will not come up at all. I do not see the thread for the program running. Am also having some difficulties installing OOo3.1.0.

Hrrm. I don't use their graphic tools, so I'm not sure what that's supposed to do. (That is, adding a user to admin group.)

When you get to the login screen, by hitting ctl+alt+F2, you should be able to get to a console screen. At that point, you should be able to log in as root, and try to figure out what happened, perhaps by looking at /etc/passwd.

That may be part of the upgraded security as of F10(?) when they disabled root (or equiv) from logging in via the GUI.
If you go back to the way it used to be, just clicking on a root reqd fn eg System Admin, will ask for root passwd and then you're good to go.

Ahhhh--good point. I had thought, when the OP said he added a user to the admin group via the GUI, it wouldn't have affected that.

However, as I understand the issue, the OP is able to login, just not able to get back to that program.

If I have misunderstood, and they are simply unable to login, then your deduction is almost certainly the correct one.

(It may be the correct one anyway--this is one of the disadvantages of avoiding Gnome, I have no idea what people are seeing these days--I didn't even know about the root login being disabled till I saw mention of it on the fedora-testing list.)

It's not directly related to the current problem - but if you want to give your user account root priviliges, you might consider adding yourself to the sudoers list instead of the root group.
