User cant compile with gcc


I just installed Fedora Core 3.When I try to use gcc or any other compiler I get:

/usr/bin/ld: cannot open output file a.out: Permission Denied

any ideas?

Looks like you don't have write permission in your present working directory...
You can try sending the output from running "pwd" and "ls -al" for more information?

Just a guess, does the file a.out already exist in the location you're attempting to compile (i.e. did you compile previously as root in this location and now don't have permissions to remove the file) ? That's about all I can think of on the fly.

ahh I'm an idiot. I copied the files from a CD and they were defaulted as non-write files. Just had to change the permissions on all of them.
Will chmod change all the sub directories permissions too, or do I need an extra command??

chmod -R
will change all subdir's too.
