user account won't boot x, stays in graphical login in suse 9.1

Ok, this is fustrating, my suse 9.1 system was working perfectly for 2 days, then I rebooted my computer and now I can't get past the graphical login with my normal user account. It doesn't give me an error bad password, it simply keeps returning to the login screen. I can get in with the root account just fine. I made no changes at all before i rebooted, NOTHING.

I created a new account and that loads kde just fine, like root does. Only my original user account doesn't load, and I tried the other non kde logins as well. if I delete that account and recreate it, will my data and settings be ok? Or is there something else I should do?

I'd have a look at ownerships and permissions of
files in /home/<username> and /tmp/*<username>

As for re-creating the user: it depends on the distro,
which tool you use and how it's set-up. Chances are
that all data and settings (which actually are plain
text files commonly) is lost if you don't back them up.

Solution found to avoid this problem, (possibly)

Hey, I think I found the reason why my accounts were becoming unable to boot into x windows. It would stay at the graphical login box and not load kde. I think it's because I downloaded a version of azureus, this bit torrent downloading program, that was incompatible with my distribution. It looked crummy too I had noticed compared to the windows version. But then I removed it and installed the correct version of azureus, it looks even sharper than the windows version, and most importantly, my accounts are no longer being messed up.
So if anyone out there is downloading azureus, be careful which file you download, or you may encounter the same problem. seeya.

I had the same problem

I had the same problem in OpenSUSE 10.3. It turned out my .xsession and .xinitrc were busted. Just mv them to .xsession.bak and .xinitrc.bak and see if that fixes it.
