user account passwords - corrupt?

So i tried to login to my raspberry pi under my username, and it failed. i tried the root account, and it failed. is there any way that the passwords could have somehow become corrupt?
is there a way to reset the root password?

With the Pi you'd probably be better just re-flashing the SD card. Remove any keepable data using a different Linux system.
