Unhappy usb to serial adaptor

i have ubuntu 8.10 installed and i'm trying to get a usb to serial adaptor to work . i'm new to linux and know very little about it. i've tried the palmos, but in the setup it says to use hotsyn button, there is no hotsync button to use. can someone point me in the right direction to get usb to serial to work.

are you sure they aren't talking about the hotsync button on the palm itself?
p.s. i used to use a palm pilot with linux and it was a pain because the palm doesn't show up unless it's trying to hotsync or something like that...
good luck
