USB port works on Xp but not with Mandriva 2008

Hello, ;)I have an issue with an USB port of my notebook toshiba satellite pro 1.2 ghz pentium iv 256 mb ram 20 gb hardisk
Maybe some of you more experienced with linux system immediately understand this troubling issue...I am making a big effort to uderstand why the port works with xp but not with mandriva:scratch:
it's like it doesn't exist. The mouse does not work in that port
I have 2 solutions
-buy an hub
-try to solve the issue
Anyone knows a solution,. i cannot use the trackball:cry:
there is a way to check if something is missing like drivers,. firmware or whatever?
thanks in advance
:)

Hello,

Before you plug something into the port, open up an xterm (or some virtual terminal, konsole maybe) and type:
lsusb

If you get a list of USB ports, but no devices listed, good. Then plug it in, wait a couple of seconds, and then run the same command again to see if your device is getting recognized.

If it never shows up in the list, does it show up if you plug it into a different USB port (assuming you have another one). If not, maybe it's the device and not the port. If it does, I don't think getting a HUB would make any difference as they port would still not see devices from the HUB.
