USB Persistent Ubuntu 9.04 installation using vista amd anhlon
Hi guys,
this is my first post/thread. I am new to Linux, but have been thinking about the switch for years. I figured I would learn the OS on a flash drive first because I haven't backed up my files. So I have decided to put linux on an extra flash drive I have no other use for. (I realize the life expectancy will not be long). After a google search I found instructions on how to apply ubuntu on a usb. http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-ubu...stall-windows/ It seems to have worked somewhat. It acts like a live cd of ubuntu. However, when it starts to load it eventually ends up in busy box v1.10.2(ubuntu 1:1.10.2-2 ubuntu7). I get in error before this. Here is what has transpired: Casper .gz ready. [0.368001] ..mp-bios bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC [2.456029] ata1:softreset failed (device not ready) mod probe: FATAL: could not load/lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/modules.dep: NO such file or directory. Loading, please wait .... Then I get to the busy box (built in ash shell) something that looks like dos and starts with (initramfs). I have changed the casper file to a 2.0 gb one and I have also ran as administrator (vista's tacky safety thing that gets in the way of everything) like the instructions on the u904p insisted. I am not sure what I have done wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Sincerely, An official windows vista hater. |

Different file system, perhaps?

Honestly,
I am not certain. I appreciate your reply, but I don't know where to go from here. |
OK
I downloaded a 4gb casper-rw and it didn't work for me either, I even formatted as it doesn't say whether it comes formatted or not? anyway, it's very easy to make one yourself... https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Li...eCDPersistence even better, just use any ubuntu livecd, burn it to cd boot it up and open "synaptic" package manager from menu on top toolbar under System/Admin/synaptic pkg manager use the search button to look for "usb-creator" and install it while running livecd then, use usb-creator to install ubuntu to usb and make the casper-rw need any help post again |
usb installer
Another option would be to use the latest Knoppix incarnation and use its native installer to make a compressed/shorter version of Knoppix. When rebooting take the lead out of the hard drive to keep the old grub isolated.
