Unhappy USB mouse on Redhat Linux 7.3

I recently installed Redhat Linux 7.3 on my Sony laptop. The touch pad mouse works fine with X windows when I set the mouse to Generic ps2 type. But when I set the mouse type to Generic USB type x windows refuses to start up. I have tried all availble generic mouse types and none of them work except the generic ps2 types. Is there anything i can do to correct this? Help!!

I am not sure I completely understand your dilemma? You said that it works if you choose one thing, but doesn't when you choose another... Therefor, why not choose the one that works? If it's a usb mouse, and it's working when you choose ps2 type, don't worry about it. Am I missing something here?

Sorry for not being clear about my question. In simple terms the problem I have is this. want to get my USB mouse to work with my installation of Redhat Linux (7.3). The inbuilt touch pad is seen my the system as a ps2 device so when I select the generic ps2 setting X windows starts alright. But the USB mouse is not detected. So I changed the setting to Generic USB and this time X windows failed to start.
