Both lsusb and dmesg commands will work fine. And getting Huawei devices to work via Linux has been covered on here MANY times, and there is much information available through Google:
http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/

You will need to install usb-modeswitch, wvdial, and wvdialconf. Follow the instructions on the page provided. Note that since you're using RHEL, you're paying for support (right??), and can call them for assistance. You are also paying to access the online repositories, which you will NEED in order to get this working. If you are NOT paying for RHEL, then DON'T USE IT, and use CentOS or Scientific linux instead, which are 99.X% identical to RHEL, but FREE.

Autorun ?

Nopes - It has not been missing.

As I know these modems were/are still being marketed in India. E1731 / Airtel.

Do a dmesg

Check for usb device name which actually emulates as CD/DVD ROM .

Mount this device -

You will a find couple of folders there - Just run script and that should fix it.

Or of course you can also do what TB0ne suggested.

So...autorun.inf scripts now run on Linux? Thought they were just for Windows...hmm.

How about telling the OP which script to run? And without installing usb-modeswitch, or configuring a wvdial profile, how would you get the modem to work at all?? The programs supplied on those devices are for Windows.

I have been there, I have used one these sticks.

Program(s) is for both Operating systems - Windows and Linux.

I missed on script - install.sh - thats the script he needs to run. Which actually utilizes NDIS wrapper coupled with USB Modem just works ok.

Dont ask me how NDIS and USB modem are linked - you might want to check Huawei website for more details / authenticity

Sorry, but without usb-modeswitch, it won't work. And autorun.inf scripts are for Windows.

No need to...usb-modeswitch and wvdial are all that's needed, and are in pretty much every Linux distro already. If you're providing an alternate solution, please provide the details on it, and how to make it work, etc.

I am not providing any alternate solution.
I reiterate - Ask Original Poster to post/upload files OR you can visit Huawei Website and search for given software/scripts.

Next - I have been there (India)- These USB sticks are ONLY provided by provider named - Airtel. They DO support linux and software bundled on disk.
Thats all. He can go your way or just install supported software and be done with that.

I might request you to help me do same (usb-modeswitch and wvdial) - I still have some time in India - I have same stick E1731(It has IMEI/ Serial Number inside) .

I will be only too happy if you walked me through with this. I was taking convenient path(installing accompanying software on fedora/Ubuntu) - I request you to walk me right path/installation (usb-modeswitch and wvdial) - I already have wvdial installed. As for rest please let me know - I will start a new thread - or we could use existing thread so OP and I both benefit from your knowledge

And again, I reiterate: Any software/scripts from Huawei are NOT needed. I don't need them, nor want them.

Ok...so again, if you've done this, and know the procedure, then post it. The usb-modeswitch command is made for this, since the device typically shows up FIRST as a storage device with the Windows autorun on it. Once the driver is installed, the device switches to serial/modem (hence, the "mode-switch"), and you're then able to use it. Once you run usb-modeswitch, it toggles the device into modem-mode, letting you set it up with your choice of PPP dialers, like Gnome PPP, KPPP, or wvdial.

Odd that you need these steps, since you maintain the device works fine, and you've used it previously. If that's the case, why do you need further information on it?

It's been covered on this site MANY times, and Google covers it extensively; see the link I posted in my first reply, dig a little deeper for this:
http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modes...b8ee35c4f0c98d

The steps are:
  • Install usb-modeswitch from your online repositories
  • Install wvdial and wvdialconf from your online repositories
  • Read the man page on usb-modeswitch, and run it if needed (http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/...eswitch.1.html)
  • Run wvdialconf, set up your modem
  • Run wvdial..you are now connected.

Other generic stuff being there/installed

Modem should come up as following

crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 188, 0 2011-12-09 13:35 ttyUSB_utps_modem

Next of course you could pretty easily figure out / google on configuring a modem with WVdial.

Next comes wvdial.conf

Code:

[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1
;Init3 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Init3 = AT+CGDCONT=1,”",”airtelgprs.com”
stupid mode = 1
Modem Type = USB Modem
Baud = 460800
New PPPD = yes
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB_utps_modem
ISDN = 0
Phone = *99#
Carrier Check = no
Password = airtel
Username = airtel
FlowControl=Hardware(CRTSCTS)

That should set entire thing up

That's the entire point...it IS generic and easy. Again, it's been covered on here many times, and once you run usb-modeswitch, you run wvdialconf (which sets up the wvdial.conf from your other post). After that, you type in wvdial. That's it...there are no other steps. What, exactly, would you like folks to post, and how many times would you like it posted???

Huawei modems are well documented/supported under Linux, with just those procedures.

All that bugs me is why this "generic" came later then sooner - with all LQ threads at end.

Phew - Users being users - you cannot blame them - can you ? :)

Really???? I directed the OP to a site that had instructions. And (as YOU said), anyone could have Googled it. Yet, you're complaining that I didn't spoon-feed links to searches that anyone could have done?
