USB modem -3com

i'm try to get my 3com 56k Faxmodem Pro (Ext. usb/serial) modem to work under linux... i have compiled ACM USB into my kernel (2.4.17) and added a device file /dev/usb/ttyACM0 , with no joy so far. i am running console only with limited s/w (no kppp, no wvdial, no minicom, just ppp). I'm not sure what else i need to do to make this work. any suggestions?
