usb mass storage support

Hi all,

On debian I'm trying to use a usb compact flash reader, which I've been
using with MS Windows for a couple of years.

Every how-to pages regarding this suggest I need to turn on
CONFIG_USB_STORAGE in the .config file. But the menuconfig doesn't
give me that option under the usb support. I guess the kernel version
(2.2.20) is not mature enough for this? If so, what version do I need?

I'm a newbie here. I went to, followed the installation
procedure, burnt some CDs, and installed the operating system. I was
a little shocked when I found out that the debian installation is
based on the kernel version 2.2.20, which seems a bit old to me when
people are talking about 2.6. Why 2.2.20? Or did I awefully miss
something here?

Yes, you need to upgrade your kernel to later version with the proper support. Debian seems to stick way behind in the latest kernel releases for some reason..

Debian has three branches: stable, testing, and unstable - and they mean *STABLE* in the business mission-critical sense... the tradeoff is that it takes a while to test and debug before it can reach that status.

here is a good article that may help with Debian kernel upgrading:
