usb linmodems -- how to? (fc6)

I have a (perhaps useless for linux?) V.92 56Kb Hiro USB modem.
It has a Agere (Lucent) chipset (or at least lsusb seems to think so).

It is possible to get this working under linux (fc6)?

I tried installing some stuff I found on the net, (ltmodem and martiandev), but neither seem to work. scanmodem doesn't find anything.

please advise on any of:

1. how to
2. where else I can look
3. recommended inexpensive USB modem that is known to work with caller ID function (voice functions too, if possible)

Thanks,

Jeff

The only hope there might be would be linmodems. I tried to get two pci agere modems working and ended up throwing them away. I finally went to external hardware modems.

I have no problems with Lucent pci modem with mars chipset on my 64bit machines, like FC6, F7, Debian Testing, Mandriva 2007, Mandriva 2007.1 using martian driver kit from linmodems. Conexant pci modems apparently have 64bit Linux support also. I was under the impression the Lucent mars was the only one that could run on 64bit Linux for a pci modem, but I'm pretty sure I seen 64bit source at linuxant.com. And Conexant has great support but will cost money to get full speed, only 1.4kbps till you fork out the cash. I have no problems with ESS and PCTel pci modems in 32bit Linux, also Intel 537EP for 32bit but that one can be a bitch some times (but the best speed).
When I was running FC6, I tried helping others here to get their various USB modems to work with FC6. Never seen a success story though, if they did finally succeed, they didn't inform the community. Apparently FC6 is an a..hole with USB modems. Haven't heard any of those sort of issues with Fedora 7 yet, but lot's with Fedora Core 6. And I feel F7 is a great improvement over FC6, won't be long FC6 will not be supported anymore.
The linmodems project is more focused on pci modems, as normally, serial and USB (also serial) modems do not normally require proprietary drivers.

I've also installed a couple of the smart link pci modems on 32 bit systems with no problems. The agere's are the only one I've had problems with and that was a 32 bit. Also did an intel on my laptop with no problems. Cannot vouch for the PCTels or the ESS modems.

To answer your last question, ebay has some used ones for sale at a pretty good price, but do your research and make sure they are compatible with your system

Yes, the Lucent Win Modems are alright, the ones produced before Agere bought out Lucent tech. there has been many complaints with the Ageres.
