Well, that is very strange. Which version of Knoppix are you using? I believe some older versions would behave erratically with USB devices (although, USB devices work very well in Linux, unless it is a very old kernel).
I recommend you trying out a newer version of Knoppix (if any) or a different LiveCD, such as Ubuntu.
