USB harddrive

Hi

Ive got a usb hard drive which worked great until my girlfriend unplugged it while i was writing to it, now suse wont reconise it nor will windows any on know how i migh be able to cure this issue.

lugoteehalt 10-27-2007 09:42 AM

Perhaps look in /proc/bus/usb. Command: lsusb: http://www.linuxcommand.org/man_pages/lsusb8.html Look in /dev/disk/by-id/ Is it there?

wodim --scanbus might be a bit silly. Perhaps post results here?

Brian1 10-27-2007 10:48 AM

When you plug in the drive open a terminal and type ' dmesg '. What does it say? Also as root run this command ' /sbin/fdisk -l '. Post output.

If you still get nothing and under warrenty send it in.

Brian

that what i get but i aint gotta clue what it means, the hdd is powered up and i can feel it running, i cant take it back to shop either guttted,

there must be a way

lugoteehalt 10-29-2007 01:31 PM

Pull out all your usb devices including hub.

When it's switched on plug in hd's usb lead.

What does it say on the screen?

Do:

$ ls /dev/drive/by-id/

Is something beggining with usb listed, or something that's obviously the hd? If so try:

# mount -t <whatever its file system is, vfat .... whatever, try 'auto' if you don't know> /dev/drive/by-id/thing_from_ls /some/convenientMountPoint

Isn't life grand.:)

Brian1 10-30-2007 04:21 PM

How many drives on this system. Looks like 2 sata drives and possible the USB drive.

Do it this way.
Boot up the system without USB drive plugged in.
Once system is up open a console.
Plug in the USB drive.
Wait 15 seconds.
Run dmesg command and post the last 10 lines should be fine.
Also post output of /sbin/fdisk -l

My only last thought to make use of the drive but will lose the data is remove from the usb case and install directly to the IDE cable. I am guessing it is a 3.5" drive. If 2.5" drive then you would need an adapter. Then see if you can get it usable. May have to do low leveling format which is a very long process and if something goes wrong will make matters worst.
