Isn't usb interface always under current? Didn't heard of motherboard that switch power off, but if you need cable with harware switch I can provide one.

That is my understanding also -- I am not sure that it is possible for the OS to remove power from the USB port if that means overriding the hardware?

As I understand it, "Eject" and "Safely remove drive" both unmount the attached USB drive/memory stick from your file system so physically removing the device won't cause any file system corruption. There's no hardware on the motherboard which will "switch off" the power to the USB ports.

Play Bonny!

Maybe depends on the mobo or the linux release

I have a sandisk usb with a light in it... when I eject it on my desktop running Squeeze, the light remains on. On my laptop running Jessie, when I eject or "safely remove" the light goes out and remains out. I'd say that "it depends". If it's a big deal I suppose I could boot my desktop on Jessie from USB and test whether it's the mobo or the release, but either way the answer is likely "maybe, maybe not".

On my desktop, the USB ports are always live so long as the computer is connected to the mains and that socket is live - even if the computer is switched off. I use USB for backups every day and just unmounting is OK.

The "eject" is to ensure files are closed and the file system is unmounted. Has nothing to do with power.

Correct also that the motherboard will still provide power to any USB accessory while it is physically plugged in, and the motherboard is powered on and operating. Excepting probably deep sleep/hibernate. Meanwhile there are also wake from hibernate via USB signalling cases.

I have some control over this in my BIOS so I can use my T420 as a portable device charger. ;)
