USB Controller Failing on a HP Presario Desktop

Hello Everyone,

I am an extreme newbie, so far it's been 2 wonderful hours on Redhat 9. I've searched through this site and cannot find the answer to the problem I am having.

None of my USB devices work, and when I boot up I see that the USB controller fails. I have registered with Redhat, downloaded every update possible, restarted, and still nothing. Any help would be greaty appreciated.

Thanks.

Edit: Forgot to mention my computer. It's a HP Presario 6000us running on 512 mb ram.

I'm downloading the Fedora Project disks right now, as that seems to be the latest RedHat distro. I'll let you know if that fixes this or not...

Newb to newb alert: the following might help or be totally counter-productive, YMMV :)

It is my understanding that FC1 is not all that different from RH9.

I opened a thread:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=177273

because my usb died on me and I cannot work out why.

I do not want to thread-jack you but it seems that we are running similar systems (my box is presario 6030th) and maybe some of the suggestions posted by jon-do there would help.

I wonder if this is a Compaq/HP issue ?

Sorry I couldn't help more,

Thanks for the link. I ran through all the steps but none of them worked for me. I have an optical mouse so I can see if the USB Controller is working at all, which it still isn't in Linux. The light will flash when I restart, but the second I hit GRUB the light is gone and my USB mouse will not work unless I go back into Windows.

I also have printers and other things plugged into the USB ports and none of them are working also.

Ugh... this is killing me. I'm about to go back to Mandrake as that distro was able to load the USB controller. The only thing is I have a pretty good book on RH that I would like to use. I've been searching like crazy on this and haven't seen anything...

Its driving me nuts that I can't work out how to do a simple thing like print any more :jawa:

I had the same problem with my system, see profile. I had to disable the Legacy USB setting in the mobo's BIOs. After that, every thing is working without fault. I am all so using a KVM switch that uses USB to communicate with both system units. This does not show on my profile.

I downloaded FC1 but Ananconda wouldn't install. So I checked the website and they said that some computers may have problems with installing, so their new version should work better.

Of course... I ran out of cd's so I can't burn the new version yet. I tried that link and still nothing. It seems since you were once able to run USB in RH that reconfiguring it would fix it. Since RH has never been able to find my USB Controller, i'll try and install the latest version when I get some cd's and hopefully they have been added in.
