usb bootable distros

What's guys/gals. This is my first post.

I've used linux on and off for some time. I consider myself to be between noob and intermediate in knowledge.

I'm looking for a distro that can boot from a usb pen drive. I was messing around with damn small linux for the last couple of days, but decided not to keep using it because the software that it has is just too outdated.

Here are the things that I would like from a distro:
1) ability to boot from usb pendrive(or whatever they're called)
2) will allow me to install up to date software, not just the outdated packages that the creators allow.
3) will fit within 1GB

I would suggust that you take a look at Puppy Linux. Here is an article discussing the disto as well as the ablity to create a bootable thumb drive instance.

The disto itself can be found either through the LinuxQuestion site or from the projects website:

pretty much any distro that is small enough can be installed on a flash drive. many within just 256 mb. Many also have tutorials online. i have seen them for dsl, feather and even gento. you can just google for tutorials for the specific distros you want so it is really a matter of distro preference
