US Robotics Serial modem problem

I am using a US Robotics 56k v90 Sportster serial modem under Mandrake 9.0. Everytime I try to connect it says "initializing modem", all the lights light up on the modem and it just stays there, saying "initializing modem". I try to enter an intialization string in the kppp terminal but it won't let me type anything in. Is there anyone who could help me with this?

There are some switches on the modem. You need to set them correctly.

I can get the settings for you when I get home, but it will be several days. Just try changing a few things. Make sure it's not in dumb mode.

1,2,4,6,7 are up on mine

1=DTR normal
2=verbal result codes
4=echo offline commands
6=carrier detect normal
7=load NVram defaults

3,5,8 down

3=display result codes
5=auto answer off
8=smart mode

Did you get it worked out? I have a courier modem with the same problem.

Turned out that /dev/modem didn't work, and /dev/ttyS0 did.

But now it just times out when logging into network. What about you?
