also what is a paper program and what are two of them that are commonly available?

yest it is homework and i have been given the assignment of reading chapter 2 and 3 of red hat linux adition 3. i have reread these two chapters over and over since 8:30 this morning and i cant find them anywhere in the chapters. never mind the utiltiy one i found that. 1st question is what is a paper program, name two of them that commonly are available in linux? the second is if you do not install grub on the master boot record of the hard disk, how can you boot linux? please help, i know you guys think im a punk kid who is trying to get out of homework but i really cant find it.

As for GRUB, you might find something useful in the "booting" link in my sig below. To point you in the right direction, here is a fundamental: Whatever device the BIOS attempts to boot must have boot code in the first sector (or equivalent---eg I'm not clear on what happens booting a CD). The common bootable devices seen by the BIOS include hard drives, floppies, CDs and DVDs, and USB drives.

my objective is to learn. my class is just me and a teacher so regardless i have to learn the stuff. but i cannot find it in my book and i have been searching google. im not looking for a direct answer, im just trying to figure out where to look and the definition. but thank you i will try that.

alright sooo, you cannot do a dual boot without grub? i think thats what i got out of reading that stuff. as far as the paper programs thats all the question says and it hints at nothing of the sort in my book. thank you for helping me on the first question.

Unless they're talking about word processing programs, i can't imagine what a paper program is.

HINT: There might be an alternative boot loader besides grub.

alright so its not paper, its pager, my teach made a typo lol

so---"pager software" might mean something to do with memory management, the various utilities used for displaying text one page at a time, or maybe even something to do with the PAGER that Doctors and Drug Dealers carry.

In the context of your class--or the book-- what do you think he means by "pager"?

i would say along the lines of memory, because we have only had one class and he said nothing along the lines of pager like doctors and stuff

I believe the two common pager programs you are talking about are called "more" and "less"

You can create a boot disk on a diskette and then change the order of booting in the BIOS to look at the disk drive before the hard drive. It is often a good idea to create a boot diskette anyway, in case something breaks and you can't boot into linux using the grub installation in the mater boot record (mbr). I think this is what the question has in mind as an answer, seeing as it is introductory material.
