urgent laptop problems

Hi. I'm in a bit of a crunch on this new travelmate.

Acer tells me it has the famous (??) Atheros wireless chip, so madwifi should do the trick. A post on this site gives a way to install madwifi with yum. I enter,

yum -c update

as instructed, and get

CRITICAL:yum.cli:Config Error: Error accessing file for config file:///root/update

I think jump ahead to the next step, with yum -c install... and get the same thing.

So I think, well I don't know about the -c option anyway, so I try the old -y standby and get a "complete!" on the install, but still no function. One-word question: "Help?"
