sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gufw
in the terminal.

Gufw is a gui for the ubuntu default firewall.

It should be easy for you use the gui to alter the firewall settings to meet your needs.

I am going to make a suggestion, if I may: Use subject lines that describe the issue, such as "Help with firewall in Ubuntu."

It will make it easier for persons who can help you to find your threads.

Hi goody570,
From your problem I'm assuming that you are using a firewall but have not configured it properly. for example when you install firestarter (a gui firewall) the default settings will ensure that all traffic out of your computer is not affected and only what you want is allowed in. yet if you change this setting so that even outgoing traffic is blocked, you can basically not access the internet at all. the fact that disabling the firewall is allowing you to access the internet points to this.
considering that firestarter is the most common firewall tool I am assuming that you have this in your system. check under policy. the outbound traffic policy should have the "permissive by default" checked. the inbound traffic policy should also not have any rules. this is the default setting, and is more than enough for most cases.
