Yesterday my left click button on my laptop started lagging or grabbing am using kali linux 2018.4 as my primary os.help

is this a mouse or the built-in buttons of the touchpad? What kind of laptop is it? (How old is it)?

Please use a better title (i.e meaningful, see my sig) for your thread (HOWTO: edit your thread first post and choose another title).

Two things - it isn't urgent to us, we volunteer to answer questions - & Kali isn't a beginner distro.

Most threads with such a title are just skipped over by the majority on here, so heed the above info. :)

As others have said, please review the links in many of our signatures giving references from the LQ site as to how best to ask technical questions.


You say your mouse is lagging or grabbing. Lagging would seem to mean delayed. I really do not understand what grabbing would mean.


Perhaps a better technical description.


Another part of asking proper questions is telling us what you have found for mouse settings and what you have tried to do to diagnose this problem.

First step is to figure out whether it is a hardware problem or a software problem.

Is there another operating system installed on the computer? (dual boot) If so, does the touchpad work correctly in the other operating system?

Or, if your computer is single boot, what happens if you boot a Live DVD or Live USB of a user-friendly distribution such as Linux Mint or Ubuntu? Does the touchpad work correctly, or does it have the same problems as in Kali?

my apologies,my problem is my touch-pad,its an built-in buttons of the touch-pad, using hp pavilion 15.The problem is when you click ,it either grabs the browser or text or folder your opening yet if it doesnt grab or highlights texts,it lags and shows the mouse loading.I have tried booting another os and it functions correctly and when i use an external mouse it functions perfectly.

Then the solution is simple; do *NOT* use Kali.

Aside from the sticky post in this forum, Kali's own website tells you that it is designed for experienced Linux users. And even then, for network security/pentesting purposes, not daily use as a main desktop. The best question here is WHY you feel you need Kali. Any current version/distro of Linux can do exactly what Kali does, with configuration and installation of various tools. Kali does it by default, for convenience sake.

Most systems have settings for the touch pad and there may be something to allow you to adjust the sensitivity, or to test and adjust the variety of functions the touch pad affords for you.


Have you tried searching for, and adjusting any settings?

This suggests there is no hardware problems, and that you have misconfigured the touchpad options in Kali.

I am not a Kali user, but I understand it is typically run in Live mode from a USB or DVD? If that is the case, and your touchpad used to work in Kali, you can simply reboot the computer, and load a fresh new Live session. :)

Skyfamily, if you are not a Pentester or if you are not performing computer forensics, I recommend you install beginner friendly distros such as Ubuntu or Mint. As mentioned above, Kali is not recommended to be used as main operating system. If you want to learn pen testing then install it as a VM using Virtualbox or any other VM solution.

I agree with fatmac, TB0ne and ceantuco. It will much easier to get your touchpad working with a distribution that's intended for normal desktop use. Not to mention the fact you're robbing yourself of help from many others here that really could help, but given you want to insist on Kali, won't help. You can install all of the hacking tools you will find in Kali on distributions like Ubuntu, Linux Mint and many other far more suitable distributions, if you really want to learn about hacking.

But have your way, and torture yourself for nothing...
