UPS Monitoring project

So I have barely used Linux before and have never used Nagios before. A few weeks ago I was tasked with a project to monitor a handful of UPS's. I know Nagios can do this, but I have no idea how. I know you need to edit the config file, but I'm not sure how to. I know there are a variety of plug-ins for APC UPS monitoring, but I have no clue on how to use them. I've read just about every webpage regarding this, but each one assumes the reader knows what he/she is doing, and I do not lol. Any help is greatly appreciated

Let me ask you this, do you currently have a nagios environment set up with checks running and do you know how to setup a new basic check using the already built in plugins for nrpe?

Ok, so I made a ton of progress yesterday. What I have now;

-Nagios up and running on Ubuntu server w/ desktop
-APC UPS up on the network along with Nagios

My problem now is that the only thing that works is the Ping check. Everything else, battery time, temp etc is not responding. They are all timing out on port 161, any ideas?

EDIT: I basically followed this: http://mihai.radoveanu.ro/2010/02/tu...p-with-nagios/

My questions; what do I do with the plugin? Currently I have it sitting in the nagios-plugins folder. Also, what is powernet396.mib? I have not run across this yet while setting everything up.
