Upgrading to glibc-2.3.2 from GLIB 1.2.10
Hy Gang:
I am running Suse 9.0 and I need to upgrade my GLIB from 1.2.10 (or something like that. I am not sure for certain, but I know it is inadequate to upgrade to the latest XMMS). Anywho, it seems like something like this should not be done by a newbie without the sage advice of some people with experience first. I am not using an .rpm file (because as I stated I am using SuSE and they only had the source files for Red Hat I believe) so I am going with the "ball." I would like to know where I should unzip the damn thing and then what to do from there. I am a Windows guy (trying to convert) and I get the very real sence that messy with GLIB is like poking your finger around registry of Windows when you don't know what you are doing. Any advice? Cheers. :Pengy: |
glib and glibc are completely different things.
glibc is the GNU C Library; it's basically the foundation of your system--without it, nothing would work. It's not something you want to mess with unless you know what you're doing. glib (note the "c" is missing) is a library many programs depend on, but a little less crucial than glibc. There are two versions of glib: glib, and glib2. You probably want glib2; you should be able to find a package on your suse install CDs called something like glib2-2.2.3-21.i586.rpm. Install it, and you should be able to run XMMS. Lyle |
I appreciate the info, actually you cleared up a lot. I did install the glib2 from the SuSE CD's however it did not clear up the problems. Should I just de-install the XMMS that came with SuSE and install the newer version so it is forced to rely on the glib2? As for the glibc, i will not mess with it. ;-)

I just had a look at the xmms site. It says it needs glib, not glib2. I should have looked before (oops.)
Have a look at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=45094. It should get you started on compiling things from source. Lyle |
Any idea where I could get the glib source or was I on the right track previously? (see first post in this thread)
