Upgrading the Linux Kernel to 2.5

Hi.

I installed Mandrake 9.1 and I believe it's using the 2.4.x.x kernel. Could someone give me a hint or a link on how to upgrade to 2.5? Probably this is a complicated process, so I don't want to trouble anyone by asking for lengthy explanations. I couldn't find such a tutorial on the Net so please just give me a starter or a website link, which'll be more than enough.

I don't know much about kernels but isn't anything ending in and odd number unstable and ending in an even number stable? In kernels higher numbers aren't always better. There is 2.6 out now but I think that is in testing.

Thanks DrOzz... at very first glance your tutorial appears very easy to follow and I will follow it right now. I even bookmarked your thread.

I've heard that 2.6 is still in testing, but I haven't heard that 2.5 is unstable... is it?

Please let me tell you all why I want to upgrade the kernel.

As a desperate newbie, I'm desperately desperate to dissolve the discombobulating SIZZLING sound that occurs when I install any Linux distro in my laptop containing a VIA AC'97 sound card... which is quite depressing, believe me.

Whenever a sound plays, it's always accompanied by constant sizzling. As soon as a sound stops playing (e.g. I press the Stop button on XMMS) the sizzling stops too. HELP!!!

I read somewhere that upgrading the kernel might help. I'm not too confident of that but I'm willing to give it a try.

If anyone knows an alternative method, please please please tell me. I'll be very grateful and figure out how to use Affero in order to express my thanks......... .

How do you check that?

the terminal should tell you what kernel you are using. if you are using a graphical user interface, try hitting ctrl+alt+f1 to go to the terminal and use f7 or f8 instead to go back to the gui
