If I want to upgrade Samba from 2.2.7 to 2.2.8 do I just have to download the 2.2.8 tar.gz file, ./configure, make, and make install it and that is it, my Samba installation will get upgraded to 2.2.8? Or are there other steps that I have to take as well, such as uninstalling 2.2.7 first?
If you installed from source the first time, then everything should go the same the second.
If you installed from some package (RPM or DEB or other), then it might not install to the same place and cover the old files. You should prob'ly remove the old version before installing the new, then.
It's a good idea to copy your /etc/samba dir to a safe place, just in case it gets written over with the new install.
