Upgrading Kernel

I have downloaded kernel and have unpacked it.

When I run "make xconfig" I get the following error:

scripts/kconfig/qconf arch/i386/Kconfig
qconf: cannot connect to X server
make[1]: *** [xconfig] Error 1
make: *** [xconfig] Error 2

I then ran "xhost +" still the same error.

After that I tried running "make menuconfig" the following appears:

scripts/kconfig/mconf arch/i386/Kconfig
init/Kconfig:273: can't open file "drivers/block/Kconfig.iosched"
make[1]: *** [menuconfig] Error 1
make: *** [menuconfig] Error 2

Please help.......

Dear katvis,
Make sure of two things:
1. you run make xconfig in an xterm or similiar graphical tool(ie, with X already running)
2. you run everything as root
you shouldn't get any errors now.
Have fun upgrading kernel!
