upgrading KDE questions
Upgrading KDE
i have some questions about upgrading KDE i'm running SuSE 9.1 with KDE3.2, and i want to upgrade it to KDE3.3.1 using RPM packages. * is it safe to do it this way? * should i do "init 3", or can KDE be running? i downloaded the RPMs from http: // ftp.scarlet.be / pub / kde / stable / 3.3.1 / SuSE / ix86 / 9.1 / thanks |
I have done this via YAST. Add this to your install sources: ftp.suse.com (as the server name) and pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.1/yast-source into the directory. Then let it update itself. Go to the "install software" section and choose "select by packages". Select "GUI" and "KDE" - everything that is ticked will need to be upgraded: click the tick (or checkmark if you like) until it changes to the "update" symbol. Do this for all packages. (Some will be new and so will only have a tick or be blank - in this case, click once to blank it and agin to retick it. Then install. After a reboot, you will be at a command prompt: login and run startx, on the next reboot you will have your correct login screen.

Did not work for me.
Came up with too many dependencies and i did not want to force install it. Thanks for the info though. |
Got it to work
But now i am getting one error at startup Could not start process Unable to create io-slave: klauncher said: Unknown protocol 'devices'. What could be causing this error?? Thanks |
today i've decided to upgrade KDE. i did all as you said (ticked packages for upgrade, etc.), but before accepting i've pressed Show Dependencies and got a lot of error messages like:
kdelibs3 3.3.1-3 + kaffeine needs kdelibs3 > = 3.2.2- + kdeaddons3-konqueror needs libkimproxy.so.0 + kdebase3 needs kdelibs3 > = 3.3.1- + kdegames3 needs kdelibs3 > = 3.3.1- + kdelibs3 needs libjasper-1.701.so.1 blah blah blah... |
