upgrading KDE
 

I want to upgrade my KDE so I can run the new amarok versions. The thing is that the whole package of KDE 3.2 (and higher) is too big for me to download.

Would it be possible to upgrade just some parts of KDE and not the whole thing ? packages do I have to install in order for me to run amarok???

Dude you have a big project ahead of you... I never got to upgrading KDE on Redhat 9 when I had it. If KDE is too big to download, I would recommend you ask to download it at your school (i'm assuming you are still at school here) or when you have internet access. But I don't believe you could download only some of it though, because it's a fairly big thing :D...

I'm running Gentoo now and KDE upgrades are a breeze, but I wouldn't recommend it if you don't own a 24/7 connection. Anyway, how to upgrade KDE on redhat... I would try the RPM's provided by Redhat, but i do believe that the Redhat 9 RPM tree (the place the packages for your sistem are) is frozen in time and not updated, which brings us to your problem: you can't upgrade KDE because even if you did stumble upon an RPM you could not meet the dependencies (i'm not 100% here though). Users have been asked repeatedly to move to Fedora Core. I hear it is very stable, and would recommend the same action to you.

You can upgrade to the newest kde 3.3.2 using apt to simplify things, but it will still take a good bit of time. You can check out this site kde-redhat.sourceforge.net for information on how to upgrade.

oh ic.. it's easier for me to get fedora. So what version would you suggest? core 1,2 or 3??

i'd suggest the newest stable version. That means 3. The "why" is simple... Time before the kernel gets so old that it will be obsolete is, well, farther away. I would still suggest gentoo over fedora :D. It will NEVER get obsolete. But if you don't own a fast connection it's a hard distro to manage.
