Upgrading

I have made post here before but I was hoping that someone could help me. I have been a Linux user for not even a year yet and I have the program down by now but I have never been through an upgrade to a newer version. I am using Ubuntu 9.04 and I was wondering if I upgrade to 9.10 will I lose my files i.e: music, pictures that sort of thing. Like I said I have never had to upgrade yet and I do not want to lose my stuff.

Ubuntu 9.04 is the newer version of 8.04
Ubuntu 9.10 is the newer version of 8.10
Personally I am not in favour of upgrading , backup you're /home and all the stuf you did not want to loose and do a clean install.
I know it is possible to do a upgrade , but the change to run into trouble is higher with a upgrade
