upgraded Kubuntu to Hardy Heron, sound died, Dolphin won't open html files
Fools walk in...recently, I upgraded Kubuntu from Gusty Gibbon to Hardy Heron. Wanting to take advantage of this rare window of spare time, I decided to upgrade everything that had upgrades ready. All at once. How could I be so stupid? Uhh!
(I guess you know where this is leading.) I didn't expect that the group upgrade would download any beta programs, but, I ended up with Firefox 3.0b5. This is not a problem, because, the only glitch I've seen is a very minor problem with radio buttons requiring an extra click. However... problem 1: A few days later, I noticed that my sound was gone. I suspect that it's been gone since the upgrade. Somtimes I hurry and don't notice things and wasn't working with sound files during said few days. In System Settings, advanced tab, System Servies, alsa-utils is set to not start at bootup and is shown to be not running. I'm guessing this doesn't matter, but, I'm not sure. problem 2: In Dolphin and only in Dolphin (not on the desktop, not in Konqueror), when I mouse-over an html file, I get the following prompt: Quote:

I really don't know what to make of this. I don't know what is the invalid menu entry. Given that the offending file has amarok in it's name and in it's contents, could it be that problem 1 and problem 2 are the same problem? It's a home built box, xfx mobo, 3 GHz Pentium D, xfx nvidia graphics card, 2 GB RAM, 500 GB Seagate hd, on-board sound, DVD ROM and floppy drive. Any suggestion would be greatly welcome. |

https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubun...in/+bug/204741 has the solution, which is to do the following, as root: Code:
cp /usr/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/amarok_addaspodcast.desktop /usr/share/apps/d3lphin/servicemenus/amarok_addaspodcast.desktop |
Thanks, tredegar. I'll give it a try, at my first opportunity.

Tredegar, thanks. That did the trick. I can now access html files from dolphin. Now if I could get my sound back.
I appreciate it! |
Good, and thanks for the follow-up.

Try as root Code:
/etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart Otherwise K- System-settings - Sound Enable the sound system Auto-suspend if idle after 1 second On the Hardware tab, try both "Auto detect" and "Open Sound System" If that doesn't sort it, what is your soundcard? ( lspci or lsusb should list it) |
I now have sound.
I entered the root command and tried both the K-System setting commands and nothing happened. I thought that maybe I should turn up the volume on my stereo (where I send the output from by pc's sound). I noticed that my stereo sound source setting wasn't on aux input. When I reset it, the sound was working, so, I don't know which command worked. This was not the original problem. I recently reset it to listen to an fm radio broadcast. Power outages cause a default resetting. There have been a few outages lately. I really appreciate your help. |
help me how to do it
|
How to do which? I had two problems.
1/ My sound quit, after a series of updates. 2/ In dolphin, I couldn't mouse-over an html file without problems, as shown in the first message in this thread, above. This also means that I couldn't use dolphin to move or copy or do anything else to the file. |
