Upgraded FC5 to FC6. Now anable to access Win network.
Hi all,
I've Upgraded FC5 to FC6. Now unable to access Win network. When I try, I get to a certain point and a msg appears "Couldn't display "smb:///mshome" location is not a folder". Any ideas? Bye Up grading can be dangerous!! |
Check to see if you have a copy of the old smb.conf (look at the date). If so try copying it to smb.conf.

I assume you mean Fedora Core 6, but do you realize that Fedora Core 6 has not had support since Dec 7, 2007? Fedora 7 will only be supported for a few more months. If you want to use Fedora, you probably should be using Fedora 8.

The last time I did an upgrade results were disasterous so from now on I'll only do clean installs and I'm so busy at the moment that I don't have the time to do that and download all my favourite apps again and sort out any problems. This is why I tend to stay with a release for some time. Thanks

If you are going to stick with a release that long you might want to switch to Centos(free to download). It has a five year support life, as opposed to Fedora's one year. Centos is RHEL with the logos removed. I switched all of my servers for this reason. I still run Fedora on my desktop.

Lets not confuse support with development cycles. FC5,6,7 etc are development cycles and support is what you come to the linuxquestions community for and should not be conditional on running the latest version of your preferred linux flavor.
Whilst I agree a fresh install is the preferred way to upgrade I understand where richag77 is coming from. He(she) has a lot of time invested in installed applications and in theory you can upgrade Fedora ONE LEVEL at a time hence FC5 to FC6, FC6 to FC7 etc. You then test for and resolve hiccups - heck I've done it many times in the past. It seems as though the original problem raised was samba related but this has got lost in the "supported release" debate. If richag77 comes back maybe we can concentrate on the actual problem. |
Thanks guys, but the problem has sorted itself out. Apparently we have had a change of routers at work. A few weeks ago we changed again and voila! everything is working again.(network access, irc ) Thanks again.

yum upgrade
"clean install" is the mantra of those who don't really know what's running on their Linux box.
The upgrade from FC5 to FC6 only needs downloading and installing the appropriate repository files (fedora-relese-6-4 and fedor-realease-notes-6-3), and then running Code:
# yum clean all Much easier to upgrade, then to re-install all needed applications, servers, etc and restoring all needed user and production data. Server issues |
