Upgrade: Yes or No

My question is: should I upgrade(change) my actuall Mandrake 10.2 Limited Edition 2005 to Mandriva Free Editon 2006? Are there benefits for me or there are no benefits? Iīm using my pc mostly just for fun and entertaiment (music games movies and internet) Or should I try another distro? Is there a better distro for this kind of activities? Anyone tried Mandriva 2006 Free Edition? The only thing I get used to and I donīt wanna give up is the sorround sound!

When i upgraded, i noticed little change, (except the splash screen).

I use my PC for similar things to you, it seems. Though my sound is stereo...

It's a good thing to "stick with the devil you know," for a while, but it is also a good thing to, at some point, ditch it and try something else. When you become familiar enough with Linux to want to "peel off the covers" and look under the hood of the thing, you will have taken a step forward .. one that Linux uniquely offers you.

Meanwhile, it is also a good thing to keep your systems continuously up-to-date.

If I upgrade to Mandriva will I lose my old settings? (ex: wine) or in my /home directory? The allready installed softwares will work or have to reinstall them? I sgoing to change my kernel to? I installed the Nvidia driver witch has recompiled the kernel, I need to repeat this after the upgrade?

I upgraded recently from Mandriva 10.2 to 2006. I decided to do a new install.

From other posts, the advice seemed to be that it is generally better to do a fresh install rather than upgrade. My /home directory was on a separate partition that I chose not to format and so all that data was retained, but I did need to reinstall and configure things like internet etc.

Suggest it might be an idea to have a go at the upgrade and see what happens, as you may not need to configure things again.
