Upgrade to jessie but lost wifi network

As I had a similar problem when I first installed wheezy, I followed the instructions on https://wiki.debian.org/wl

I think I should not have followed item 3.

My laptop has no wifi and it is difficult to get a wired connection since it is dedicated to my partner's business setup.

Hi...

Getting a wired connection may be a necessity, just to make you aware. :(

I'm not sure I can help here but can you open a terminal and post the entire results of the following commands...

Code:

lspci -nnk | grep -i net -A2
Code:

iwconfig
Code:

rfkill list
Code:

dmesg
If you can't get a wired connection with this system, you can copy and paste the results to a text file and then save it on a thumb drive. The dmesg report will be long, you may need to separate the results into more than one post. ;)

Regards...

Thank you, Ardvark71. It is impossible for a beginner to search for answers.

Hi...

The command for rfkill was entered incorrectly. Copy and past only what you see in the box below... ;)

Code:

rfkill list
Please also post the results for...

Code:

lsmod
Also, just to confirm, were all the steps you followed in the instructions successful? Did you receive any error messages? If so, what were they?

Thanks! :)

kestreltowers 09-08-2015 05:26 AM

Sorry but I still get the same response to rfkill list -> bash: rfkill: command not found. I know it is there because ls -l /dev/rfkill shows it is.

Code:

tuddy@tycornel:~$ rfkill list
bash: rfkill: command not found
tuddy@tycornel:~$ lsmod

Regarding the instructions in https://wiki.debian.org/wl
I knew that /etc/apt/sources.list was OK because I had had no problems during the update, upgrade process. There were warnings about some drivers or certificates that were not going to be supported in future. I did not understand everything as it flashed past.
There were no reported errors during step 2. apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname .... I che.cked carefully that I had correctly entered the string.
No errors either as I modprobe -r b44 b43 b43legacy ssb brcmsmac. However, modprobe wl responded FATAL not found.
I proceeded no futher and would not really have attempted to configure wireless interface unaided.

Thank you for your time :)

cynwulf 09-08-2015 05:57 AM

Try the brcmsmac before messing about with the broadcom proprietary driver:

https://wiki.debian.org/brcm80211

As per the wiki page section 1 "installation", ensure that the firmware-brcm80211 package is installed. Then remove and reinsert the kernel module.

This should give you a wlan interface which you can configure as per usual.

Shadow_7 09-08-2015 10:42 AM

modprobe -r removes modules from being loaded. In your lsmod and dmesg output I saw now wireless drivers. Perhaps modprobe without the -r would help

# modprobe b43
$ dmesg | tail -n 30

The other linked url seemed to suggest that ssb and wl conflict so don't have both loaded at the same time.

$ lsmod

Otherwise tg3 seems to be functioning, which is probably your ethernet.

Shadow_7 09-08-2015 10:48 AM

http://www.linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43/

Seems to suggest the your card uses the wl + brcm80211 driver.

# modprobe -r b43 ssb
# modprobe brcm80211 wl
# dmesg | tail -n 50

That's what I'm thinking, too. ;)

I did this first successfully - no problems. Then, I attempted to understand
http://http://www.linuxwireless.org/...s/Drivers/b43/ and tried to link your comments Shadow_7 about driver conflicts. This looked like a way of avoiding my ignorance:
Quote:

Ubuntu/Debian
In recent versions of Ubuntu and Debian, installing the firmware-b43-installer package will handle everything for you:
Toggle line numbers
1 sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
You will be asked to automatically fetch and install the firmware into the right location. Again, you will need an internet connection.
 It installed but didn't ask me anything and I should apt-get purge to remove what ever it has installed.

Thank you cynwulf :)

https://wiki.debian.org/brcm80211

Posted by someone else mentions the brcm80211 conflict with b43.

# apt-get install firmware-brcm80211

As mentioned in that link.

# modprobe brcmsmac
(or brcmfmac, the smac is the software MAC version)

Seems to be the actual module/driver name in the kernel, my mistake.

https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/...vers/brcm80211

With additional details.

And broadcoms download page.

https://www.broadcom.com/support/?gid=1

Which does 43224, but not 43225.

Mentions of wl here: https://wiki.debian.org/wl
But I can't find anything meaningful in debian 8 so probably dated information.

... in short ...

# apt-get install firmware-brcm80211
# modprobe brcmsmac
$ dmesg | tail -n 30

kestreltowers 09-09-2015 03:15 PM

Thank you, Shadow_7. You must be thinking that we are simply going in circles. I wonder if I should find out how to remove Debian installation on this partition and start again with a distro that doesn't have these wifi network issues?

# apt-get install firmware-brcm80211
# modprobe brcmsmac
$ dmesg | tail -n 30
I did that and this is the dmest result:
