upgrade RH7.3 to RH9 fails

newbie need to (upgrade from RH7.3 or) newinsstall RH9.
whatever installation i choose (graphical, text or with options), allways i get a halted system. last message at blue screen:

""code: 80 48 6e 40 c3 8d 7600 53 8b 44 24 08 8b58 04 80 60 6e bf
<0> Kernel panic: Aiee, killing interrupt handler
In interrupt handler - not syncing""

how to stop the quick screen (pause button dosen't work) before the blue scree appears. nothing is written to /var/log/messages

without the installation cd ( after blue scree halt) the RH7.3 system works again proper, but i need RH9 for a ibm3590 tape drive which is not supported under 7.3.

pre-thanks
