Upgrade Redhat Enterprise from 2.1 to 3.0
 

I'm running Redhat Enterprise Linux 2.1 and want to upgrade to 3.0. I'm very new to linux but am well versed in AIX and Solaris.

The documentation says to just type 'linux upgrade' at the boot prompt but that's not working. Does anyone have suggestions or know of a good step-by-step that could guide me through the process?? THANKS!

Just go into a normal installation (assuming it is like Red Hat and Fedora) and it should ask you if you want to upgrade. If not, when you come to the screen asking you to make sure you want to go forward and letting you know you can back out, ctrl+alt+delete out of it.

You do have the disksfor RHEL 3 right? You can't just do a 'net upgrade of RHEL because of the licensing issues...

When the documentation is referring to the boot prompt: it means the boot prompt you get when booting from the RHEL installation disk, not a command prompt. So insert the RHEL 3 disk 1 into the computer and bootup.. you will get the "Red Hat" linux graphic and a promptthat displays "boot:" this is where you want to type "linux upgrade" you can also press F2 at this point to view additional options for booting.

It should work if, at the boot prompt, you key "linux upgrade" it should continue just like a normal install would though it will be an upgrade, so you'll save your docs and settings..

That's what I mean, at the boot prompt for RHEL 3 just hit enter to do a normal installation (when booting from the CD) and at some point it should ask u if u want to upgrade your existing installation. If not, just back out before you commit the changes.
