Upgrade Questions

I am a newbie to Linux and Mepis. I have only been on Mepis since last fall. My former OS was Windows XP. I have several upgrades listed in the task bar, but when I go to install them, they fail and the number list continues to rise. My question: Is there a way to
get the upgrades to install in a timely fashion without spending hours
on the PC? Also, does Mepis have an automatic upgrade system in place
that would start each time I join the internet and would take care of
changes as they come along?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Upgrade speed

The only thing with which I have lots of Linux experience is installation and two upgrades one with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 upgrading RHEL 3 and one with RHEL3 upgrading an older 2004 version of RH workstation.

The installations have always taken a while and just about as long as the upgrades. Depending on the hardware, the installations did not always go well.

For the most recent RHEL3 --> RHEL4 upgrade, the upgrade went well, and when my telnet/ssh login process times increased, Red Hat would not support it, because I had upgraded, rather than installed fresh.

I have not used MEPIS.

I would personally not want any automatic updating / upgrading. Also, before automating the process, you would need to know why it failing manually. Can you tell us what exactly happens with a failed update?.

Synaptic does not appear to have any automation feature, but you could write a script with apt-get.
