Upgrade problem:failed to fetch file Error in ubuntu 8.04


I am trying to upgrade ubuntu 8.04 hardy heron, but I am getting the same message, 404 not found and then Failed to fetch....
At first I ran update,there was no problem; but when I ran upgrade,then I got the following messages. Sorry for such a long message, but it might be useful ( not quiet sure,I'm a newbie).

E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing?

hello all, I resolved it. I changed the software sources to download from the main server.
system > administration > software sources > select download from main server.
I think the other servers don't have all the necessary files to upload. I don't know what's the point to maintain such a server where they don't upload the files in time and cause problem to newbies like us
