upgrade php4 to php5

i have fedora core 1 and i dont know how to upgrade it
i saw something with yum to add source repository to find php5
but i cant seem to get it working

Why not compile PHP5 with the same options as PHP4?

ive tried with yum and apt-get but i only have php4

Support for FC1 was dropped years ago. They have not been any updates in years (prior to PHP5 release). There will be no further official updates of FC1 of any kind. Since FC1 is so old you will probably not have half the requirements to run PHP5 (libs just too old). I would strongly consider switching versions (F9 is current). You may also want to switch to a distro with a longer supports life as Fedora only supports versions for one year. Centos is RHEL with the logos removed. It is free to download/update and has a 5 year support life.
