upgrade Mandrake

hi everybody,

Would like to have some help in this issue if possible.

I have Mandrake 8.2 already installed but I need to upgrade to Mandrake 10.0, I have the cd's.

What is the procedure to upgrade? I don't even know how to do this?

Or if there is any web site that explain HOW TO UPGRADE.

Thanks a lot

The way to start is to put CD 1 in the CDROM, and reboot the computer. The rest should be taken care of by the install program, beginning by asking you whether it is an install or an upgrade (install is cleaner, but it means redoing things that you have set up). Just keep answering the questions (accept the defaults if you don't know the answer), and let the install program do its thing. In my limited experience, there isn't much to it unless you run into a hardware problem.

Good luck!

The installation program should detect your version of linux and offer an option to upgrade. To be safe, you may want to backup the files in your home directory.

Which files should he back up?

MAGOVIA 02-01-2005 09:14 PM

Everything is being working fine with the current version. I have to do the upgrade because I use Gnucash and I have experienced some difficulties with 8.2.

What happen if there is a problem, I have all my files in /home/magovia?

Are You sure the program will automatically find everything to upgrade it, What will happen with gnucash and all the accounting work I have?

Do I need to back up everything?

thanks

The /home/magovia is the directory I suggested backing up.

The install program will use the rpm database to find out which programs you have installed and will upgrade those programs. My suggestion to backup your data is for just in case.

Thank you all,

I did only upgrade, the system found the old Mandrake, everything ok, but when rebooting xfree was claiming an error with xserver. So mandrake was available only with the black screen.

I decided to do Install only formating / and /usr not /home/magovia.

Then after 1 hour, there was LiLo asking me for my choice between xp and mandrake.

The system runs o.k. but there is a problem with language, Everything is in Italian, and my mother language is Spanish.

Does anybody knows how to change this?

During the installation you were asked about language, and apparently you accepted the default English.

Excuse me for saying this, but you need to learn about some resources for the future. I am just a newbie, but went to www.linuxquestions.org, and searched the string "change language mandrake." One of the posts seemed like it might help you--and you should look at all of them if the following does not work. Here is the relevant passage (where German (=de) is the language of choice):
-----------------------
Open the file /etc/sysconfig/i18n (log on as root, type "gedit" followed by this file name)

This file contains the language instructions for your computer system to use while booting. We will have to append at least the UTF-8 extensions to the ISO annotations of the locales (e.g. for English en_US.UTF-8). As I want my System to work completely in German, my file looks like this:

LC_TELEPHONE=de_DE.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=de_DE.UTF-8:de
LC_MONETARY=de_DE.UTF-8
LC_ADDRESS=de_DE.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE=de_DE.UTF-8
LC_NAME=de_DE.UTF-8
LC_PAPER=de_DE.UTF-8
LC_NUMERIC=de_DE.UTF-8
SYSFONT=lat0-16
LC_TIME=de_DE.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=de_DE.UTF-8
LANG=de_DE.UTF-8
LC_MESSAGES=de_DE.UTF-8

LC_IDENTIFICATION=de_DE.UTF-8
--------------------
I assume Spanish would be "SP" instead of "DE"

Somebody who really knows this stuff will hopefully correct me if I am wrong, but this is how I as a newbie would go about trying to solve the problem. Hope this helps.

thank you for your advices... I'll take note of that for future posts.

Let me try this and I will answer back.

Thanks a lot.
