upgrade kernel 2.6

I am new so please be patient with me. Thanks.
How can I upgrade my Mandrake 9.1 sys with kernel 2.4.21 to kernel 2.6.5 and keep all my same settings? I dont know what options to pick and what not to pick.
Specifically, is there a file or files I can copy from my /usr/src/linux-2.4.21-0.28mdk directory to my newly untarred linux-2.6.5 directory, so that when I run make menuconfig it will have by default all the previous settings from my previous kernel?

Thanks again

Check in your /boot directory for a config file based on kernel 2.4.21. If it exists, copy it to /usr/src/linux-2.6.5 as .config then in /usr/src/linux-2.6.5 type "make oldconfig".

Thanks for the fast reply.

In my /boot dir I see (that have config in it):
config -> config-2.4.21-0.28mdk

I think the line with the "->" in it is a symlink, but I dont see the file it is linked to.

Should I use the config-2.4.21-0.13mdk file for what you said?

Thanks again.
