upgrade

I had installed redhat 9 on my pc.It recognised my sound card and graphics card.I was able to listen to music. But there was no software to watch movies. So I uninstalled redhat 9 and installed redhat 7.3.
Now here I got graphical user interface, but it could not recognise my sound card. That is, by using the xine software, I was able to watch videos, but could no listen to the diaglogues.
So I then upgraded my redhat 7.3 to redhat 9.

Now, after the upgradation the linux os boots up directly into textmode. When I gave the command startx, yet it failed.

Can anybody of you tell me where did I go wrong, and how to rectify it. My principle aim is to watch a movie on linux os.

My another question is that suppose I have installed redhat 9 on my pc.Can't I just load the xine software from the redhat 7.3 to my pc?

I can't download the xine software from the net, because I have no internet at my home.

My sound card is sigmatelAC97 and chipset is Intel845GL.

Thank you.Waiting for your suggestions.
