Updating your browser
 

I have just installed Puppy 5.7 on my laptop. This is my first experience with Linux. When I first came onto the Internet I received a message from Mozilla asking if I wanted to update to the latest version. I said "no" because I had in mind to go to Opera. I tried to load Opera but it did not take (there is an icon for it in my Startup file, but it does not activate the browser). I do have a bare bones Firefox browser on the computer, but it does not allow me to do much. For instance, I cannot open my emails with it, even though I can see that they are there. I am thinking I should go ahead and load the latest Foxfire for now so I can function on the Internet. My question is how do I find the right version to upgrade for this system? I am afraid of downloading the wrong version and messing my computer up.

Welcome to Linux Questions! I'm not very familiar with puppy but you should have a software manager lurking within it somewhere which will allow you to install/upgrade any program available. I'm sure you're also going to get a load of posts from others who can advise on how to do this from the command line as well.

Puppy refers to packages as "pets".

You can find out why Opera's not running. Open a terminal window and enter the command opera. You'll get a report on what's wrong, which you can bring here for an explanation. How dif you install it: from the Opera website?

Thanks for your reply. I tried you suggestion. I received the following message:

As of right now my Internet is running on Mozilla. I don't know how this happened. One day I had no Internet. The next day I did. Did it download itself after I refused to download it?

I did install Opera from the Opera website. I installed a version compatible with Linux.

it sounds like your coopy of Opera is missing a library in order to run. At least that is what the error looks like. Perhaps you could try the Opera official?

So, can we take it that all is well now?

Puppy is a very specific distro targeted towards special hardware.
You may wish to see if a more user friendly, more popular distro for newish hardware would suite your needs.

All is well enough that I can use my email via Mozilla. I have not seen Opera functioning yet, even though the report I received from the Terminal window said I had successfully downloaded it
