Updating Version of SUSE Linux

I am currently running SUSE 9.3 and would like to upgrade to SUSE 10.1 whilst retaining packages already installed, configuration settings etc.. YOU does not seem to provide this capability. What is the process?

Thank you in anticipation.

It won't work as you hope. Changes in major version number also mean changes in package offering. Some of the packages you now have will be there; others will not. The disparity between versions is such that you will be plagued by inconsistencies.

It's best to make backup copies of /home, /root, and /etc. Then make a clean installation of 10.X. Then restore /home and /root. /etc,however will require selective restoration of directories/files to achive a clean, consistent installation.

I learned by trying to upgrade 8.3 to 9.3. I eventually gave up the fight, and did as I suggest above.

From the posts I've read in re 10.X, I don't think things have improved to any significant extent.
