updating packages samba and glibc

Okay... I just want to know when updating these packages what is the right procedure to follow? should I first uninstall the packages? because obviously there is going to be programs that use the libs and all that.. and yes I've got one box that I need to fix at this moment cause I tried to installl glibc and the installation started when I did a --force and failed during isntallation so my whole system is screwed now :/ so any help in regards to upgrading normal packages as well as (especially) glibc would be very nice indeed!!!

If you have downloaded newer versions of the RPMs, run
   rpm -Uvh /path/to/package.rpm
to upgrade the currently installed RPM to the newer one. For something like glibc, though, it'll might complain that other packages depend on it. Upgrading will go smoother if you're using something like apt4rpm or yum.
