Updating Mint 18.2 reports error in archive.canonical

Hi Linux experts,

here is a problem I have had for over a year (see photo attached). I am constantly and always worried about privacy and data safety.

Could you please tell me, what this error exactly says?

Kind regards from a German, international teacher.

That repository isn't one you should be using anyway - it's for Ubuntu's Precise version (12.04).

Mint 18.x uses Ubuntu's Xenial repos (16.04).

Can you please paste the output from the following command so we can look at your software sources:

Code:
inxi -r

As mentioned by hydrurga, you need to edit file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
With command: sudo xed /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
There will be a line in there as such:
Quote:
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ precise partner
Change it to look like the one below and save the file:
Quote:
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ xenial partner
EDIT: Although it may not make any difference, Mint 19 canonical url is structured similar to all your xenial sources like the one below, but likely not an issue:
Quote:
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ xenial partner

Sorry to ask question that are showing my extremely low level of competence in linux: (I changed the deb as requested).

The question is: What does your EDIT have to do with my situation.

I really appreciate your help but feel confused if that EDIT dies have anything to do with my problem or not. Please clarify your competent answer for me.

Kind regards

Matthias, Stuttgart, Germany

Now, that little error is gone. Thank you for your helpful assistance. For me it is exactly this what makes Linux great (this is not an again - it has always been a good idea). I am going to donate a small amount of money to our foundation now in the hope that such things as Linux, independent and qualified knowledge and professional social groupings not regarding any particulars will grow in this world.

Kind regards,

Matthias

Hi Matthias,

Many thanks for posting that.

Please run the following (1):

Code:
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
Then (2):

Code:
xed admin:///etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list
and remove the line:

Code:
deb http://ftp-stud.hs-esslingen.de/pub/....linuxmint.com sonya main upstream import backport
Finally (3):

Code:
xed admin:///etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-source-repositories.list
and remove the line:

Code:
deb-src http://ftp-stud.hs-esslingen.de/pub/....linuxmint.com sonya main upstream import backport

Also, confirm that you still use the following software: ClipGrab, GeoGebra, Systemback, Teamviewer, VeraCrypt.

Ah, I see that you posted while I was formulating my response.

Brains' answer above was in fact not applicable to your situation as you already have that repository in another file. You didn't need to change trusty to xenial in your case, just delete it altogether.

Please carry out my suggestions and get back to me once you are finished.

Smile Problem + worries with Linux

Hi hydrurga,

I have to admit that by accident and lack of alternative I tried out Brains' suggestion and am fine right now, no error report any more.

Instead I tried to run your lines and get the attached error.

Please help my clarifying if there is anything more to do. I am constantly in touch with very different societies in this world, US, China, Europe and more - all because of family issues. I am not political in any sense. Just a truthful German and European citizen who studied well what German history and German values and the German constitution are and why. I warmly welcome any rational amount of refugees and keep in contact with the whole world through social networks which run on this system and a Firefox Browser with Ghostery to block tracking.

In this crazy situation of our world I am constantly worried if my system is safe and even more if and (in case yes) I am communicating too much. I am a very active communicator!

In case you have some 10 minutes you might advise me on how to get my system data safe and private - to a rational private-customer extent. I am willing to pay accordingly for the sake of a world that is not just helpful but fair.

Kind regards

Matthias

Brains' suggestion means that you have the same repository defined in two separate files and it could lead to future issues.

You also still refer to the sonya repository in two cases. Your version of Mint needs xenial repositories.

Anyway, there is no attached error.

Please include all your output in CODE tags (see https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...og.php?b=36313).

The repository he had ---> deb http://archive.canonical.com/ precise partner has Release.gpg 2018-04-27
The proper repository ---> deb http://archive.canonical.com/ xenial partner has Release.gpg 2019-02-12
In Mint 19, http://archive.canonical.com is in the official-repositories, not additional-repositories. Canonical is Ubuntu's official partner and their repository is automatically added in all Ubuntu default installations.

The xenial partner repo is already in Matthias' /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list. See his output above.

The precise one needed deleting altogether.

Agreed, but apt will only download the metadata once because of timestamp, so no biggy.

It's sloppy. It didn't look at the entire picture of the output that Matthias kindly supplied. It may also lead to future confusion if Matthias needs further help along these lines, if Software Sources is used, or if he carries out an in-situ upgrade. If you weren't going to be bothered to look at Matthias' output properly, you could have at least waited until I had woken up to allow me to address the information I had requested.
