Updating Grub.conf With New Kernel
I recently installed RH9 & applied all the necessary updates from up2date. One of the installs included an updated kernel...Basically, know when I boot grub displays two kernel versions. Can I just update grub.conf to remove reference to the older kernel? Do I even need it? Thanks, Rick

I usually leave old kernels there for a week or two to make sure that the new kernel is ok. It always is, but I regard it as a bit like backing up your data - as soon as you don't do it is when you'll have a problem.
After that you can delete the relevant lines from grub.conf and delete the older kernel from /boot (be careful!!!!). John |
Can I Comment It Out?
Being a newbie, I'm a little skittish about working with vi right now. Can I just comment the old kernel out? What can I say, I'm a really anal sysadmin. Thanks, Rick

Hi,
Sorry to be so slow replying - I had disabled email notifications from the board without realising. You've probably resolved this by now, but yes you can just comment out the lines. Also you can make backup copies of the file! John |
