Updating gnuplot

My set up is Windows 7==>Oracle VB (4.3.12)==>Ubuntu 12.3.4.1.1 (I believe). I got GnuPlot 4.4 and need to update it to 4.6 because it does not recognize some commands I use (copied from Gnuplot 4.6 manual).

To update I need to use Mozilla FireFox. All of a sudden I realized it cannot access the Internet. It says "server not found." I swear it worked before, don't remember really when last time, perhaps about 4 months ago.

I included Mozilla FireFox in the Windows Firewall (permitted programs) and I have another FireFox running under Windows and it works fine. I just checked.

In the Virtual Box, when you click Help tab there is a drop down option: Virtual Box Website. That WORKS.

Thunderbird mail does not work. The same error message: no connection to Server. The last email I got there was August 26.

What shall I do?

Thanks, - Alex

If I understand correctly, you want to access the Internet thru FF which is installed in Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a VM guest. From your Windows host you can access the internet.

If this is correct, you might not have a working network connection in Ubuntu. Use the Ubuntu network manager to check if you have a connection. It should tell you that you have an IP of 10.0.n.n or so.

If it doesn't check network settings in VBox manager. Check the network section. It should say 'NAT'. If it doesn't, change it and reboot Ubuntu.

If you do have an IP in Ubuntu, and VB says 'NAT' it is a Windows problem. Which I can't help you with. Although Window Firewall should not block traffic from inside out.

Thanks. Even before I read this I checked Settings in VB and the NAT is displayed. Also I want to say that all your assumptions: "From your Windows host you can access the Internet...." are CORRECT.

How can I check Ubuntu network manager? I can check Oracle VB Network Manager. In Help Tab there is a drop down option: Network Operations Manager. I clicked on that and it said: "There are no active network operations." In Ubuntu I searched for Network keyword and the following applications showed up: (1) Network Connections. I clicked on that and it said: Wired Connection1; Last used 7 days ago.

Then there is (2) Network Tools. I clicked on that and it showed some bytes transmitted and received (amazingly). There are some kilobytes back and forth. It is all in Ubuntu as I said. It also shows two IP addresses: IPv4 127.0.0.1 and IPv6 ::1. Network Tools allow ping. I tried to ping 8.8.4.4 and got an error, IP 8.8.8.8 could not be found. 139.130.4.5 and 208.67.222.222 could not be found.

The third option (3) Network says that I have a wired Network but the cable is unplugged which is not true. Otherwise I could not have posted here. I mean I post from Win7.

This is all my information.
