updating glibc

hi...I am an extreme noob here.

I use Mandriva 2006 i586 and I'm trying to update my glibc-2.3.5 to glibc-2.4 because xscreensaver 5 won't install without glibc-2.4.

when I try to rpm the 2.4, it lists all the dependancies of 2.3.5 and won't overwrite any files.

is it safe to uninstall 2.3.5 with the --nodep command and then install 2.4?

If not then how should I go about doing it?

thanks

glibc is *massively* important to your system, if you upgrade that without dealing with dependencies correctly i'd expect a largel busted system afterwards. essentially you do need to update it correctly if at all. it's been a while since i used mandrake, but i'd assume that urpmi will still successfully handle any dependencies involed. it's certainly very important that you stick to officially produced RPM's for things like this, as you can easily find yourself drifting of on to a less and less official path, which kinda dooms you when you appreciate how picky rpm's can be at times.
